The first-ever exhibition in Italy of more than 450 images by Edward Steichen (1879–1973) in Reggio Emilia. A visit to the exhibition will take in the city’s traditional exhibition venues in Palazzo Magnani and the Cloisters of San Domenico, where the works of a man unanimously acclaimed as one of the most important exponents of twentieth century photography will be on show. Visitors to Palazzo Magnani will get an opportunity to appreciate many vintage pieces from leading American museums as they peruse the entire career of a truly prolific, influential and also controversial photographer, an authentic innovator who was accustomed to reinventing himself all the time, who excelled in all the genres he touched: in “pure” art, in fashion photography, in advertising photography, in portraiture, in the nude, in still life photography, in landscapes, in cityscapes, in reports of theatrical performances, as a war photographer and ultimately as an authoritative director of the Department of Photography at the New York Museum of Modern Art. In the Cloisters of San Domenico, meanwhile, visitors will be able to view more than two hundred photographs that Steichen took while he was working with the publisher Condé Nast: shots of haute couture and of the Hollywood stars who were regularly published in Vogue and Vanity Fair magazines.
